Nighthawks by Edward Hopper 1942
Sandy is originally from New York.  These streets are where she grew up.  She struggles with money and the diner is the place she grew up in and where she finds happiness.
Johnny is a businessman from Georgia who came to New York looking to expand his business. His business failed and he spends all his time at the dinner talking about his financial struggles.  HIs family is all is Georgia and he misses them deeply, but cannot afford to go back to Georgia.
Robbie is an independent, intelligent man.  He would rather be alone than with anyone.  He is quiet; he sits back and stares at Sandy because she reminds him of his deceased wife who loved that little diner.
Bob is an elderly drunk.  His whole family lives in England, he came to America in search of a better life.  In New York all he found was a new friend and that was alcohol.  He spends days and nights at the diner telling people alcohol will solve all their problems.
  1. Sandy: "What's new tonight?" [Robbie mumbles words to himself]
  2. Johnny: "Oh, you know, the usual.  Watching the stock market decline while my business goes down in flames."
  3. Bob: "Johnny, why don't you have drink? It will calm your nerves." [Johnny politely refuses with a light giggle]
  4. Sandy: "Why is every so glum? Cheer up! This diner is a happy place, full of childhood memories."
  5. Robbie: "Not for everyone Sandy, not for everyone."
  6. Bob: "You know, Sandy is right.  Everyone be happy, drink some." [Johnny starts to tap his foot]
  7. Sandy: "Everything alright, Johnny?"
  8. Johnny: "Of course not. I'm home sick.  My family is all in Georgia and I miss them more and more every day."
  9. Robbie: "I know how you feel buddy." [Tears are streaming down Robbie's face]
  10. Bob: "I'm telling you all... have a drink with me!"
  11. Johnny: "No! Bob can't you see our lives are already miserable and we don't have money as it is, why would we blow it on alcohol?"
  12. Sandy: "Okay everyone calm down.  Bob no one is going to drink.  What do you think about starting a support group? And Robbie everything will be okay, I know your wife would not want you sitting here drowning in your sorrows. Johnny, I planned on going to Florida soon to visit some family I can stop in Georgia if you would like?"
  13. Bob: "Oh Sandy, I would love that!" [Tears of joy run down his face]
  14. Sandy: "Okay, I will call on Monday to get everything set up!"
  15. Robbie: "You're right Sandy."
  16. Johnny: "That would be amazing Sandy.  You're a wonderful woman, I'd like to thank you so very much for everything you've done it means a lot to everyone here."
  17. Bob & Robbie [in unison]: "Agreed."
  18. Sandy: "Well I can't just watch y'all waste your life away.  This diner is one of the finest in New York and after spending so much time with y'all it's worth seeing you all happy."
  19. Johnny: "I'd like to walk you home tonight, if that's okay with you?"
  20. Sandy: "Of course!" [She smiles ear to ear]
  21. Robbie: [walks out of the dinner, the tears are gone.]
  22. Johnny: "Let's go, it's getting dark out."
  23. Sandy: "Okay, goodnight Bob!"
  24. [Sandy and Johnny walk out holding hands, both as happy as ever].
